Children make up about half of the rural population. A lot is demanded of them when the parents spend a childhood or even life in prison. Many children go to work instead of going to school because their families are poor. Among 7- to 14-year-olds, about 50 percent work. Even when the children and young people are older, they often have to support their families. The situation is even more dramatic when a parent is in prison. This is the reality of life for around 61,000 children in Zambia. Hoffnungsträger stands up for the poorest of the poor and supports them in the areas of education, medicine, nutrition and social welfare.

Zambia has one of the fastest growing populations in the world. Since 1950, the population has increased sevenfold and is projected to double again by mid-century. Currently, the country has a population of about 17 million. A country where more than half of the entire population is considered poor - 54.4 percent.
